Oysters Everywhere!

On Friday we went to Estero Bay and observed oyster reefs. We took the boat out to the reef
and searched for the organisms that live in or near these reefs. Some of the creatures we found were incredible. We found some monstrous whelks along with rock crabs and a few gobies. Exploring the reefs was awesome. There amount of organisms that were contained in a small group of oysters was incredible. I never knew that so much life was going on in the spaces between the oyster shells. I learned that a primary use of these oyster reefs are as nursery to many of the fish that inhabit the bay. This means that many of the fish spend their juvenile stages in these reefs in safety while they mature. This experience taught me how important oyster reefs are to the ecosystems in Estero Bay.
