Day 2 @ USFSP: WEATHERBIRD II

co·hort

  [koh-hawrtnoun
1.
group of animals of the same species, identified by a common characteristic, which are studied over a period of time as part of a scientific or medical investigation.

Today my cohorts and I learned to deploy a CTD (Conductivity Temperature Depth), pictured above; Neuston Net and Bongo nets, for plankton; a Capetown Dredge; and finally an Otter Trawl! Being aboard the WEATHERBIRD II was a new experience for most of us, and overall we fared pretty well. There were some bumps in the road (cough*seasickness*cough), but we overcame them and collected some really good samples. From the trawl and dredge we obtained some really awesome specimens, many are being added to Dr. Judkins preserved collection!
